Description

Poster: This engraving shows Flavio Gioia, also known as Flavio Amalfitano. This 14th century Italian navigator was long credited with the invention of the (dry) compass.

Although this is now widely doubted, Gioia is still credited with the development of the classic compass design: a closed container with a glass cover in which the magnetic needle moves on a graduated wind rose. Accurate and reliable navigation and measuring instruments were of decisive importance for the age of great discoveries, but also for the production and use of maps.
